New Products Roundup: Color Drops, Storm-Ready Membranes, and a Better Nailer
July 20, 2026 · 4 min read · By the RoofTree Digest desk
This week's product notes cover new shingle colors from GAF and Owens Corning, updated underlayments, a low-profile ridge vent, and a smarter metal edge system.
Shingles: The Color Wars Continue
Both majors used the start of 2026 to refresh their color lineups, and the moves tell you where the market's head is at.
GAF rolled out Bold Definition, a four-shade expansion of the Timberline HDZ line — Chestnut Valley, Cliffside, Midnight Mesa, and Sierra Sand — announced at IRE back in January. Nothing changes on the performance side; you're still working with LayerLock Technology, the StrikeZone nailing area, and Dura Grip Adhesive. Worth repeating to your crews and your customers: the WindProven Limited Wind Warranty only kicks in when the shingle is installed with all four required GAF accessories. If your install crews are cutting corners on starter strip or ridge cap to save a few bucks a square, you're quietly voiding the warranty selling point that closed the job.
Owens Corning named Evergreen Mist its 2026 Shingle Color of the Year — a Duration Designer color that puts a green spin on the palette, joining Gray Tweed and Mountain Pine. All three have been orderable since January 1, so if you haven't sampled them for your design boards yet, get on it before your competitor does.
More significant for your bid sheet: OC is reintroducing the Woodcrest and Woodmoor lines, now carrying a 130-mph Wind Resistance Limited Warranty and bumped up to a Class 4 Impact Rating under UL 2218. That's a real upsell conversation in hail-prone territory and anywhere insurers are pushing impact-resistant credits. Get your estimators trained on the warranty specifics now — homeowners in Texas, Oklahoma, and the Front Range are going to ask about this the minute their agent mentions a premium discount.
Ventilation: A Ridge Vent Built for Speed
Owens Corning's new VentSure RidgeProwler 30 is a low-profile rolled ridge vent aimed squarely at install efficiency. It's nail-gun ready in a 30-foot roll, engineered to resist buckling during install (anyone who's fought a stiff ridge roll on a hot day knows why that matters), and the flat-side vent design reportedly needs up to 80% less cleaning than comparable products. Less debris intrusion means fewer callbacks on ventilation performance — a category that doesn't get enough attention until a homeowner's attic temps or ice damming become a problem.
Regional Fire Play: PABCO Cascade
PABCO's Cascade shingle line has been tested to UL790 Class A, the top fire classification for external fire exposure, and comes with Algae Defender technology built in — a sensible pairing for PABCO's Pacific Northwest home turf, where algae staining is a constant homeowner complaint. Limited Lifetime warranty is included. If you're working wet, shaded, tree-heavy neighborhoods, this is a line worth adding to your supplier conversations.
Underlayment: Two Different Jobs
Two new underlayment products serve two different purposes, and it's worth keeping them straight for your specs:
- IKO Polystick PX HT — a non-reinforced, self-adhered underlayment for sloped roofs. Lightweight but built to hold the line against moisture, wind-driven rain, and ice dams. Straightforward eave and valley protection play.
- GAF FT Solutions Specialty UDL — a breathable synthetic underlayment designed to let household moisture escape rather than trap it. That's a different failure mode you're solving for — condensation and moisture buildup from the interior, not just water intrusion from outside.
Don't spec these interchangeably. One's fighting water coming in, the other's managing moisture trying to get out.
Storm-Resilient Membranes Get a FORTIFIED Push
A broad slate of self-adhered membranes, anchor sheets, and fire-rated products — Polystick IR-Xe, TU P, TU MAX, TU Plus, MTS Plus, MX, Polystrip SA, Polyanchor HV/SU, and the fire-rated Polystick XFR, Polyanchor XFR, Polyflex SA P FR, and Elastoflex SA V FR — are now positioned for use under the FORTIFIED Roof program. With FORTIFIED designations increasingly tied to insurance premium reductions in wind and hail states, having a compliant product list handy for your estimators isn't optional anymore — it's a sales tool. If you're not already quoting FORTIFIED-compliant assemblies in coastal and hail markets, you're leaving money and differentiation on the table.
Metal Roofing: Better Edges, Better Panels
MuleHide's Nailer-T is a heavy-gauge extruded aluminum wood nailer alternative for edge metal — resists moisture, rot, and insect damage, and comes with pre-punched slotted holes to speed install and accommodate thermal movement. Compatible with TPO, EPDM, and PVC, including retrofit work. For commercial crews tired of replacing rotted wood nailers on tear-offs, this is a durability upgrade that pays for itself over the life of the roof.
Separately, a new residential steel panel system in shake and slate profiles uses a four-way multi-point locking mechanism and 26-gauge steel — thicker than most competing panels but still lighter than an asphalt roof, with factory-applied coatings meant to resist dirt and staining. Details on this one are still filling in; expect more specifics as it gets wider distribution.
Bottom Line
Nothing revolutionary this cycle, but plenty that matters to your bottom line: impact-rated reintroductions and FORTIFIED-eligible membranes are direct responses to the insurance-driven market, the ventilation and underlayment updates are efficiency and callback plays, and the metal edge and panel updates are aimed at durability complaints crews already know by heart. Match the product to the problem, keep your crews current on the warranty fine print, and use the Class 4 and FORTIFIED angles in your sales conversations — that's where the real ROI is this quarter.
